Videos By Google's Matt Cutts
Since
Google gets about 50% of all search engine traffic, it pays
(literally!)
to keep up with their latest changes. (The other 50% is split up
amongst the rest, with MSN--I believe--having the next largest chunk of
traffic at around 10%.) But most people (including
me) haven't ever been at a point where they could say, "Oh, I see...now
I know all I need to know about Google."
Until
now...Well, you can never "know it all," of course, but at least now
you won't be so vulnerable to "rumor control."
Because
in 2006, a long-time Google employee named Matt Cutts started making
short instructional videos on Google's policies that pertain to how
Google ranks web pages and web content in general. "In general"
is actually a good description of the best detail you can expect,
however, from Matt's videos. Because--due to Google's 'secret sauce' of algorithm
recipes--Matt can only get but so detailed. After all, the
proprietary algorithms that Google has developed over the years IS
Google. They're covered by a bazillion patents that would take a
nerd well versed in geek-speak as well as lawyer-speak to be able to make any sense
of them whatsoever...
Nevertheless, he appears to do a good job explaining
the 'big picture' for internet marketers as to what we need to do to
get our websites high in the SERPS--like on the first page or so.

It's
probably best to start with Matt's "Disclaimer" video first, where he
introduces himself. By the way, don't let the informal setting of
these videos fool you. The information you stand to get is priceless. (They're shot in Matt's home with cats running around, he's in a T-shirt, and so on.)
