The VEO Report
This
ebook was written in 2005 by Colin McDougall. I only remember it
coming out in '06, however, for about $79. Much of the meat of
the book comes from info that Colin extracted from interviews with Matt Cutts (Google
employee)...
(Definitely
an entrepreneurial thing that Colin did--interviewed someone of
interest, made an ebook, and is still selling it years later!)
Anyway,
the lessons Colin learned from his "white hat" methods of website
optimization made him fairly wealthy and definitely an authority on
"authority sites." He coined the term "VEO"--"Visitor Enhanced
Optimization" which, according to Colin McDougall, should replace
SEO--Search Engine Optimization--if you ever hope to get anywhere with
your online biz.
Without giving away all his secrets from his
ebook (because he doesn't give his book away), I've summarized some
points from his ebook that he say's you should do with every site you make from now on:
- Install a Privacy Policy on all of your sites.
- Put a detailed "Contact Us" page that includes a phone number.
- Install a message forum and solicit visitor participation.
- DMOZ and Yahoo are trusted directories that will break the "sandox effect."
- Remove obsolete content - also remove from server.
- Register domains for 5 or more years.
- Avoid keyword-focused domains and HYPHENATED domains.
- People like pictures; if site could be enhanced w/photos then put them in--they will increase visitor sticky time.
- Prominentely place a SSL Certificate if you sell something from the site.
- At
least 50% of your inbound links should be your domain name. If your
links are natural, you will have a very large percentage of inbound
link anchor text (the “clickable” text on a webpage) that
matches your domain name.
- TrustRank is a very crucial element for ranking in Google...
Google
has a listing of trusted hub sites for several categories. If you
acquire a link from a trusted hub site directly your site will receive
a high trust score. Trusted hub sites will have a review process in
place that screens potential sites for inclusion; Not every site
on the internet will be added to these hub sites.
Well, that's the gist of what's in The VEO Report. Keep in mind his sites do EXTREMELY well.
